Captain Doug Rice

Captain Douglas Rice serves with The University of Texas at Austin Police Department and brings 29 years of law enforcement experience. He began his career with the Austin Police Department (APD) in 1997 following his service with the United States Army. Throughout his career, he has developed extensive experience in public safety, criminal investigations, special operations, and organizational leadership.

During his time with APD, Captain Rice served in a variety of specialized roles, including Homicide, the Gang Unit, Narcotics, and SWAT. After retiring from APD in 2020, he continued his law enforcement service with the Texas Attorney General’s Office Prosecution Assistance Team before joining UTPD.

Throughout his career, Captain Rice has led complex law enforcement operations, supervised criminal investigations, coordinated special operations assignments, and managed critical incident and emergency response efforts. His experience spans patrol operations, investigations, executive protection, emergency management, personnel development, strategic planning, and policy development.

Known for his collaborative leadership style and commitment to professional excellence, Captain Rice is dedicated to advancing public safety practices and supporting a safe and secure environment for the university community.
