About UTPD

The University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) employs more than 148 committed professionals and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. UTPD is dedicated to serving and strengthening the campus community and provides comprehensive law enforcement services through specialized teams, including Patrol, Investigations, Executive Protection, Special Events, K-9, Motors, the Medical District, and an established West Campus Patrol. The department also operates its own 911 Dispatch Center.

UTPD officers, dispatchers, and professional staff work collaboratively to support safety, emergency response, and community engagement across the university's diverse geographic footprint. UTPD's jurisdiction includes the main campus in Austin, designated portions of West Campus, the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, the Brackenridge Tract, Paisano Ranch, the Bee Caves Research Center, and the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. These locations support the university's teaching, research, housing, and public service missions and reflect the unique scope and complexity of the department's responsibilities.

UTPD operates through a community-oriented policing philosophy, encouraging open communication between the department and the community it serves. In support of this mission, UTPD maintains a dedicated Victim Services Unit that provides advocacy, support, and resources to individuals impacted by crime. The unit works closely with campus and community partners to help connect victims with services and ensure they receive the assistance and support they need.

Commitment to Excellence

UTPD is committed to upholding the highest professional standards in policing and service. Our department continually evaluates and updates policies and practices to ensure compliance with Texas law enforcement best practices and to meet the evolving needs of our campus community.

These practices reflect our dedication to transparency, accountability, and excellence in all aspects of law enforcement. Regular reviews and ongoing updates ensure our procedures stay current with modern policing standards and continue to provide the highest level of service to our community.
