Incident Notifications

UTPD - Types of Alerts

Emergency Notification

Emergency Notification

What it is: A notification of any confirmed, significant emergency or dangerous situation occurring on campus involving an immediate and credible threat to the health or safety of students or employees.

Emergency Notifications are issued broadly and may be received via text, email, and the LiveSafe app. These alerts will also be posted to UTPD social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and X: @UTAustinPolice) and the University’s Longhorn Alert website (https://longhornalert.utexas.edu/).

Why we do it: Emergency Notifications provide critical, time-sensitive information to help students, faculty, and staff take protective action.

When we do it: Incidents that may trigger an Emergency Notification include any significant emergencies or dangerous situations (may include Clery Act crimes) such as active shooter, bomb threat, weather emergency, ice/snow emergency, building fire, hazmat release, health emergency (pandemic), utility disruption of 10+ buildings, hostage incident, civil disturbance or riot.

Timely Warning

Timely Warning (Incident Notification)

What it is: Notification of any Clery Act crime committed on the University’s Clery Act geography that represents an ongoing threat to the campus community. Timely Warnings (Incident Notifications) may be received via email and the LiveSafe app. These alerts will be posted to UTPD social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, and X: @UTAustinPolice).

Why we do it: Timely Warnings (Incident Notifications) are intended to provide timely, relevant information about certain crimes that have occurred and represent an ongoing threat to the safety of the campus community, supporting awareness and prevention efforts.

When we do it: Issued as soon as pertinent information is available following the report of a qualifying crime that is considered to pose a serious or continuing threat to the campus community. Incidents that may trigger a Timely Warning include Clery Act crimes such as criminal homicide, manslaughter, sexual offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, stalking, domestic violence, dating violence, or hate crimes.

UTPD has a responsibility to comply with Clery Act requirements, releasing timely warnings about reported crimes to the campus community in a manner that will aid in the prevention of similar crimes, as well as providing emergency notifications within Clery Act geography when the health and safety of the campus community is at risk. The department utilizes one or more of the following methods of communication to post warnings: text messages, campus wide email, social media (Facebook & Twitter), UT Emergency and home page, and closed circuit television systems in residence halls and other buildings.

  • Text alerts
    • Used to communicate a credible, immediate, ongoing threat to campus
    • Alerts provide immediate direction to students, faculty and staff with specific actions to take
    • Emails
      • Used to communicate crimes and incidents on and immediately near campus
      • Emails provide details and updates that can aid in the prevention of similar incidents
      • All UT community members automatically receive email notifications
  • Social Media and Emergency Website
    • Twitter: @UTAustinPolice, @UTAustin and @AustinPolice
    • Facebook: UT Austin Police, The University of Texas at Austin
    • emergency.utexas.edu

Alerts issued for incidents beyond UTPD jurisdiction are dependent upon notification from outside agencies. UTPD is not obligated to issue alerts outside Clery geography, but will relay safety messaging from other agencies as a courtesy to our community.

The University of Texas at Austin Police Department submits crime data to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Crime statistics are then published in the Crime in Texas (CIT) Online Portal. The Portal was developed to provide a platform for the public to access online and on demand statistical and analytical information about crime reported in the state.

Any questions regarding the statistics found in the link below should be directed to UTPD Records, 512-232-9615.
