The UTPD Training Unit is responsible for developing, coordinating, and maintaining training programs that support the professional growth, operational readiness, and ongoing development of department personnel. From academy preparation and field training to specialized instruction and continuing education, the unit ensures employees are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to serve the university community safely, effectively, and professionally.
Responsibilities and Functions
The Training Unit’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinating and overseeing academy-level training for new recruits.
- Supporting the department's Field Training Program and the development of newly commissioned officers.
- Delivering and managing ongoing in-service training for department personnel.
- Ensuring compliance with state-mandated training requirements and certification standards.
- Coordinating specialized training in areas such as investigations, mental health response, de-escalation, and other advanced law enforcement disciplines.
- Conducting firearms qualifications, scenario-based exercises, and other proficiency assessments.
- Maintaining training records, certifications, and performance documentation.
- Identifying emerging training needs and developing programs that address evolving challenges in public safety.
Partnerships and Collaborations
The Training Unit partners with internal and external subject matter experts, agencies, instructors, and professional organizations to support high-quality training delivery and professional development.
