Simple steps to prevent crime and increase your safety!
Stay aware of your surroundings
Avoid distractions while walking, especially at night. Stay alert, keep your head up, and be mindful of people, traffic, and activity around you. If you choose to wear headphones, keep the volume low or use only one earbud so you can remain aware of your environment.
If you see something suspicious, call 9-1-1 or use the LiveSafe app to report it. If you ever feel unsafe, contact UTPD. Our officers are here to help.
Secure your belongings when parking
Property theft is one of the most common crimes on campus, but it is often preventable. Always remove valuables from your vehicle or keep them out of sight. Be sure to close all windows, lock your doors, and take your keys with you every time you leave your car.
Lock your bicycle and scooter properly
Use a high-quality U-lock to secure your bicycle or scooter to a fixed, immovable object. For added security, consider using a secondary cable lock. You can also register your bicycle or scooter with UT Parking and Transportation Services to help with recovery if it is lost or stolen.
Use campus safety resources when traveling at night
Avoid walking alone at night when possible. Call SURE Walk at 512-232-WALK (9255) to request a safety escort anywhere on campus. For transportation beyond campus, use UT Night Rides.
If you are traveling to areas west of campus, you can also contact the West Campus Ambassadors for assistance.
Be mindful in public spaces
The majority of campus crimes are crimes of opportunity. Avoid leaving your belongings unattended in public areas such as libraries or the Texas Union. If you need to rest, keep your belongings secured and within reach at all times.
