Prepare
Know your exits. Know where to hide. Identify items that could be used to defend yourself. Attend one of our Civilian Response to Active Attack training events.
Act
- RUN — Get out if you can, even when others insist upon staying. Leave belongings behind. Your life is more precious than "things." Once out call 911.
- HIDE — If you can’t get out, find a place to hide. Barricade or lock doors. Hide behind large objects. Turn out lights and silence your phone.
- FIGHT — Attempt to incapacitate the shooter. Act with aggression. Improvise weapons. Commit to your actions.
To fully understand the Run, Hide, Fight concept, The University of Texas at Austin Police Department and Campus Security recommends you take five minutes to watch the FBI's “Run. Hide. Fight.” instructional video.
