University Parking and Transportation oversees bicycle and scooter registration and is required. Registration better enables police to locate the owners of stolen or abandoned bicycles or scooters. Stolen bicycles or scooters registered with UT have been recovered as far away as Colorado.
Every year, UTPD sends about 350 recovered bicycles to the UT Surplus Property Auction because we could not trace the bike back to their owners. These bicycles could have been returned if they had been registered.
