The Citizen Police Academy (CPA) gives the public a better understanding of UTPD through insightful information of its operations and personnel. It also provides department personnel a chance to interact with and to increase rapport with the community we serve.
Over the course of seven weeks, we will help you understand how we do our jobs, why we do things certain ways and how you can help make yourself safer and help us serve you better. Each week a different area of UTPD is covered. These topics will include patrol procedures, communications, criminal investigations and much more. Instruction consists of lectures, demonstration, tours and hands-on practice and is presented by members of UTPD and outside instructors.
Participants will get a chance to meet and talk with UTPD officers and staff members throughout the department. In return, our employees will get to speak with people representing a wide variety of community interests. We hope the graduates of the Citizen Police Academy will take their new knowledge into the community and educate others when the opportunity arises. We hope our officers will, in turn, become more aware of our community’s concerns, needs and expectations of law enforcement.
The next CPA will be in the fall. Academy sessions will take place at UTPD on Monday nights from 6-9 p.m. If you are interested in attending the Citizen Police Academy, please complete the application (PDF) and email it to Lieutenant Greg Stephenson at email@example.com. Class size is limited and applicants are subject to criminal background check.
