Free VIN etching

Lock It or Lose It
The Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction Project is urging vehicle owners to lock their vehicles and take their keys.
APD is joining with the UTPD in a citywide effort to promote auto theft awareness programs.
Vehicle Identification number (VIN) etching will be offered free on Friday, February 24, 2006, at Disch-Falk Field, 1300 E. Martin Luther King Blvd. at IH-35 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in parking lot 104.
District Representative officers from Central East, Central West, and Downtown area command will be attending along with the APD Immigrant Protection Team, Downtown Rangers, Commute Solutions, Clean Air Force, Capital Metro, Texas Department of Insurance, Texas Department of Transportation and KASE FM 100.7.
All vehicles have a federally assigned vehicle identification number (VIN). The etching of a VIN on the windows of a vehicle helps to deter thieves because it is more difficult to dispose of property that is identifiable.
The auto theft awareness programs are funded through the Texas Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA) to reduce auto theft in Texas.
