I have received several inquiries from parents with regards to Identity Theft after the news story yesterday. The University will contact all of the students, former students, graduate students, and anyone else whose personal information was affected. For additional information go to:

For all of us there are a few things that we can do to prevent our identity from being stolen.

Start by restricting all of your personal information and the personal information of your high school and college age children. Your State issued driver's license or ID information can be restricted at the time of renewal or go online. You need to indicate on all credit card applications that your information is restricted. This will prevent the credit card company from selling your information.

When applying to the college or university of your choice, once again restrict all personal information. Current students, staff and faculty member can access their personal information online and restrict the use of this information.

There are several things to watch out for if you suspect that your identity might have been taken:

Monitor all of your financial accounts. You are looking for unexplained charges or withdrawals. Account for all of your monthly bills or other mail. This may indicate an address change made by the thief.

If you are notified that your personal information has been compromised notify one of the major credit reporting companies immediately. The three credit reporting companies are:
Equifax: 1 800-685-1111
Experian: 1 800-experian (397-3742)
TransUnion: 1 800-916-8800

A fraud alert will be place on your accounts.
For additional information you can contact the Federal Trade Commission: 1 877-id-theft (1 877-438-4338)

Crime Prevention Tip:

Many of the older U-shaped locks currently being used to secure bicycles can be easily defeated with the end of a Bic pen. The plastic pen will function as a skeleton key, opening the lock. The minimum recommendation for securing your bicycle is a U-shaped lock that uses a flat key. The best recommendation in securing your bicycle is incorporating a two lock locking system. This system consists of a U-shaped lock and a thick self locking cable lock.

I would like to remind everyone that if you observe a suspicious person in a bicycle rack and you contact the UT police and that call leads to the apprehension of that individual, the UT police department will provide you a pizza of your choice.
