It Is not uncommon to see an auto thief steal a car, remove valuable and dump the car in an out-of-the way location where that person will steal another vehicle to return home. To keep your car parked where you want it, consider the following:

  • Use a steering wheel immobilizer to prevent your cars wheels from turning when a thief tries to drive your car away.
  • Have a kill switch installed on your car. This device prevents your car from starting until the kill switch is turned off.
  • Have an alarm system installed in your car to draw attention to your car when a thief attempts to steal it.
  • Consider having a tracking system installed on your car to aid in its recovery if it is stolen.
  • Have your vehicle windows etched with your vehicles identification number. The Austin Police Department will do this free of charge at various times and locations. Contact the Austin Police Department Auto Theft Unit to find out when and where you can have this service done.
  • To make your vehicle less attractive to thieves, make sure you never store items inside your car. You can remove the temptation to break into your car to steal the radio by concealing your stereo. Do this by placing a towel across your dashboard, like your protecting the dash form the sun, allow the towel to drape down over the stereo.
