Theft: Three textbooks were stolen from a secured 1st floor locker. The locker had been secured with a combination style pad lock. Loss value: $225.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

Combination locks can be easily defeated by a thief who wants to gain entry into a locker or tool box (see below). Many times, the thief can defeat a combination pad lock without causing damage to the lock. UTPD recommends the use of a keyed pad lock to secure lockers, tool boxes, etc, etc, etc. This time of year the amount of text book thefts can skyrocket. Often times, a student can not identify his or her textbook from another textbook of the same title and author. To aid the police in recovering your textbooks if they are stolen, select the same page in every textbook you own, say page 125. On that page write your state issued driver license number or identification card number. If your books are stolen, you can tell the officer your driver license number is on page 125. With that information, your textbooks can be identified at book buy-back stores.
