Centennial Park, 1620 Red River

Occurred on 8-31-05 at 12:35 PM.

Indecent Exposure: While walking to work, a UT staff member observed an unidentified subject who she believed to be feeding squirrels by the west bank of Waller Creek. As the staff member approached, she recognized that the subject was exposing himself in an obviously excitable state. The subject was described as a white male in his 20s or 30s, wearing a white t-shirt and shorts.

Crime Prevention Tip:

You never know when you will see something that immediately needs to be addressed by the proper authorities. For that reason, you should always keep a cell phone with you whenever you are out and about. To improve upon the response time of the UT Police Department, you should program our telephone number into your cell phones speed dial. We can be reached at 512-471-4441. This will allow you to have contact with the police department in just seconds.

Gregory Gym, 2105 Speedway

Occurred on 8-30-05 between 9:30 PM and 9:50 PM.

Theft: A black colored bi-fold wallet containing $6.00 cash, a Texas Driver License, a social security card, a debit card and a credit card was stolen when it was left under a baseball cap on the floor behind a basketball goal located in the 2nd floor gymnasium. Loss value: $10.00.

Crime Prevention Tip:

Unattended and unsecured items are stolen from places like gymnasiums and libraries on a regular basis. Do not give a thief the opportunity. Make sure you keep your property secured whenever you are not actively watching the property. In this case, the property was stolen while the owner played basketball in the same room. Another point that should be made here is that most identity thefts start with a simple theft like this wallet theft. The thief now has access to the wallet owners social security card. Having ones social security number makes identity theft relatively simple. To protect your good name and credit, DO NOT CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD with you. Leave it with other important documents in a secure location in your home, or in a safety deposit box.

Harassment: A dormitory resident received three telephone calls at her 1st floor dormitory. In the first call, the caller identified himself as Keith and went on to make alarming statements. The caller in the other two calls disconnected the phone call when the resident answered the telephone.

Crime Prevention Tip:

In this case, the resident used the STAR 57 (*57) feature on her campus telephone to trap the telephone number of the caller in a computer database. If you receive a harassing telephone call on your dormitory or campus office telephone, tell the caller to stop calling you, hang the phone up then pick the receiver back up and dial *57. This will log the telephone number of the last person who called your telephone into a computer database. This will aid in the identification of the caller. You should then contact the police department to make a police report.
